 Caregiver Occupational Therapy Training Program

The Caregiver Occupational Therapy (OT) Training Program offers four (4) engaging classes that will provide education and resources for family and friends that are caring for someone that is aging and/or living with a disability.

Following completion of the program, participants will receive a FREE caregiver toolkit with supplemental online resources for caregivers to increase knowledge, skills, abilities, quality of care, improve self-confidence, and promote self-care. Individual sessions can be scheduled by appointment. 

Course Offerings

Course 101: Best Practices to Care for Yourself and Others

During this course, family and friend caregivers will learn the importance of taking care of yourself to better care for others. Participants will learn the "Eight Dimensions of Wellness" model to develop a personalized action plan to implement self-care into their daily lives. Caregivers will gain knowledge on how to implement simple sensory strategies to increase quality of care of others.

Session time: 60 minutes

Course 102: Physical Safety and Accident/Injury Prevention

During this course, participants will learn ways to safeguard themselves and others. Various adaptive equipment will be presented as useful tools for those you care for, to decrease burden of care and increase their level of independence with daily functional tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and dressing. Caregivers are educated on proper body mechanics to prevent injury during transfers or during assistance with daily activities such as bathing. In addition, this course will cover simple environmental modifications for fall prevention, and increased safety maneuvering around the home. Session time: 60 minutes

Course 103: Rehabilitative Exercises

During this course, participants will learn a simple exercise routine to implement with those they care for, which includes resistive bands, weights, and isometric exercises. These exercises may be helpful to improve strength, range of motion, and endurance to increase level of independence in activities of daily living and overall quality of life. 

Session time: 60 minutes

 

Course 104: Community Resources

During this class, participants learn how to identify free or low-cost recourses available for both the caregiver and those they care for. Resources presented may include continuing education/training courses provided by CalGROWS, CPR/first aid, and locating affordable medical/adaptive equipment. Resources presented for those they care for may include support groups, social groups, exercise programs, and meal preparation classes. Session time: 60 minutes
